The skills gap poses a significant obstacle for young individuals transitioning from academia to the professional environment, as exemplified by Anika Nower, a 24-year-old from Bangladesh. Despite facing challenges in entering the job market, Anika's story demonstrates that with determination and access to resources, individuals can navigate these challenges. While excelling in her studies, Anika identified the need to enhance her professional skills, such as Excel proficiency and effective communication, to align with the demands of the job market. Determined to succeed in her career, she sought out opportunities for skill development and growth after completing her studies.

"I lacked essential professional skills that employers were looking for."

Young people need skills to meet market needs, but many are falling short, contributing to a global skills gap and exacerbating youth unemployment. Remarkably, 75% of individuals aged 15–24 are not on the right path to gaining the skills required for employment. Young people are the future of our economy, and preparing them for the world of work is crucial.

To empower youth with the relevant knowledge to thrive in today’s workforce, youth like Anika can enroll in the Passport to Earning (P2E) platform which was implemented in Bangladesh under the Girls’ Education and Skills Partnership (GESP) launched by the UK Foreign and Development Office (FCDO) in partnership with Shomvob Technologies Limited. P2E offers free, certified education and skills training. By accessing this platform, they can learn and get certifications which can benefit their future employment, contribute to personal growth and economic stability.

Through P2E, Anika gained comprehensive training in essential workplace skills, including Excel, communication, and project management. Besides acquiring these skills, she also received mentorship, shaping her into a competitive professional. Today, Anika is thriving as a skilled employee at Inkam Limited.

Her transition into the job market facilitated her financial independence and bolstered her confidence. "Now, I can contribute meaningfully to my workplace and support my family." she said. Her trajectory from academic achievement to professional success highlights the importance of practical skills in navigating today's competitive job market. Anika's narrative is an example of how education and opportunity can pave the way for a brighter future for countless young graduates.
