Joy: Merging Science and Tech for a Healthier Nigeria
From learning to earning, digital skills are shaping Joy’s path in science and technology.
On March 25, 2025, 16-year-old Joy stood confidently at the Yabatech GESP Hub, sharing her journey into the world of technology, a journey that took her from learning to earning. A passionate science enthusiast from Imo State, Nigeria, Joy is currently studying Science Laboratory Technology, a path she discovered back in secondary school, where she proudly served as her school’s Lab Prefect.
Driven by her interest in science, Joy hopes to combine digital skills with hands-on knowledge to help improve healthcare outcomes in Nigeria. Her journey took a new direction when she was introduced to coding through the Girls’ Education and Skills Partnership (GESP), supported by UNICEF Generation Unlimited and the UK government's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

Through GESP, Joy began exploring web development and applying her new digital skills in practical ways. She secured her first paid internship, showing how learning can translate into income and opportunity for young people.
Now, she hopes to share what she has learned with other girls and encourage them to explore digital skills. “Every girl deserves the right to learn a skill today,” she says.
As she continues her journey, Joy is building technical skills, confidence, and experience that are helping her prepare for the world of work and shape her future at the intersection of science and technology.
